In the quest for a just society, humanity has tirelessly marched forward for over a thousand years. Throughout this long and often tumultuous journey, societies have seen progress, setbacks, and remarkable achievements. In this article, we will explore the key milestones and remarkable figures that have shaped our world and brought us closer to the ideal of a just society.

1. The Enlightenment and the Age of Reason

The Enlightenment period, which spanned from the late 17th to the 18th century, was a significant turning point in the march toward a just society. It marked a shift from the dominance of religious and monarchial authority to a focus on individual freedoms, reason, and rationality. Thinkers such as John Locke, Voltaire, and Immanuel Kant advocated for concepts like natural rights, freedom of speech, and the separation of powers โ€“ ideas that would contribute to the foundation of modern democratic societies.

2. The Abolition of Slavery

One of the darkest chapters in human history was the era of slavery. For thousands of years, people of various races and ethnicities were subjected to the horrors of enslavement. However, the 18th and 19th centuries witnessed strong movements advocating for the abolition of slavery, led by influential figures like Frederick Douglass, William Wilberforce, and Harriet Tubman. The tireless efforts of these abolitionists culminated in the eventual banning of slavery in many parts of the world, marking a crucial milestone on the path to a just society.

3. The Suffrage Movement

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, women around the world fought tirelessly for their right to vote and participate in the political process. The suffrage movement, led by remarkable women like Susan B. Anthony, Emmeline Pankhurst, and Simone de Beauvoir, sought to challenge the deeply entrenched gender inequalities. Their relentless activism and resilience paved the way for women's suffrage and marked a significant step forward in the quest for a just and equal society.

4. The Civil Rights Movement

The 20th century witnessed a surge in movements that fought against racial discrimination and sought to establish equal rights for all. Figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Nelson Mandela became symbols of resistance and drove the civil rights movement with their powerful messages of unity and justice. Through peaceful protests, boycotts, and legal battles, they were able to bring about vital changes, ensuring that the principles of equality and justice were upheld.

5. The LGBTQ+ Rights Movement

In recent decades, the fight for LGBTQ+ rights has become a prominent cause in the march toward a just society. Movements advocating for equal rights, non-discrimination, and marriage equality have gained significant traction worldwide. Influential figures such as Harvey Milk, Ellen DeGeneres, and Edith Windsor have played pivotal roles in challenging societal norms and fighting for the inclusion and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.

6. Environmental Justice and Sustainability

The emerging challenges of climate change and environmental degradation have brought a new dimension to the fight for a just society. Activists like Greta Thunberg and organizations such as Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion have galvanized global efforts to address these pressing issues. Their work highlights the importance of protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for all living beings, transcending national borders and inviting collective action.

As we reflect upon the 1000-year march toward a just society, it becomes clear that progress has been made on multiple fronts. From the Enlightenment era's emphasis on reason and freedoms to the contemporary fights for gender, racial, and LGBTQ+ equality, each milestone has contributed to a more inclusive and fair society. While the journey is far from over, the remarkable figures and movements highlighted in this article have propelled us forward and served as beacons of hope, reminding us of our shared responsibility to create a more just world for future generations.

โ€œThe development of these ideas (Spiritism) present three distinct periods. The first is that of curiosity, excited by the strangeness of the phenomena produced; the second, that of reasoning and philosophy; the third, that of applications and consequences.โ€ (Allan Kardec)

We are in the third period of the Third Revelation, that of Application and Consequences. Hence, the excitement has been worn off during the early heady years of Allan Kardec, the Doctrine has been discussed and further defined by the books of Leon Denis, Francisco (Chico) C. Xavier, Yvonne Pereira, Divaldo Franco and other mediums. Now it is the time to start applying the Doctrine, to not only our daily lives but to transform the world.

What should happen when more and more people believe in the Doctrine of Spiritism? Do we collectively continue on as before? A mass market for consumers, while the media feeds us moral relativism? Absolutely not - as Spiritist, we must begin the transformation from a planet of atonement to a world of regeneration. A world of respect and justice, without martial conflicts. Sounds easy, but extremely difficult to implement. And it must be a gradual and non-violent evolution. For the end does not justify the means. The means (love, charity, fraternity, respect, and honor) justify the end, for that is the only path which adheres to what we have learned.
