Through a comprehensive and carefully curated training process, highly skilled dogs are paired with struggling soldiers or veterans. These service dogs undergo intensive training programs that equip them with the skills to help mitigate the symptoms of PTSD or TBI.

In addition to their therapeutic roles, these canine heroes provide invaluable companionship to their human counterparts. The bond developed within the program often extends beyond just addressing medical needs, transforming into lifelong partnerships and friendships.

Benefits of Canine Companions:

The positive impact of canine companionship on the lives of soldiers and veterans is immeasurable. The service dogs trained through the Soldier Best Friend program offer a range of physical, emotional, and psychological benefits.

1. Stress Reduction and Emotional Support:

One of the key benefits of having a service dog is their ability to reduce stress levels and provide emotional support. These remarkable animals possess an innate sense of empathy and are adept at sensing anxiety or distress in their human companions. Through their gentle presence and comforting touch, service dogs can help alleviate anxiety, reducing the impact of PTSD and TBI symptoms.

2. Increased Socialization and Confidence:

Soldiers and veterans experiencing PTSD or TBI often face challenges when it comes to socializing with others and building confidence. Service dogs act as social facilitators, helping to break down barriers and encourage positive interactions. These loyal companions serve as a bridge, making it easier for soldiers to reintegrate into society and form meaningful connections.

3. Sense of Purpose and Responsibility:

The presence of a service dog provides soldiers and veterans with a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility. Caring for their canine companions teaches them accountability and allows them to regain a sense of structure and routine. This renewed focus contributes to overall mental well-being and aids in managing the challenges associated with PTSD and TBI.

The Story of Soldier and Best Friend:

Countless heartwarming stories have emerged from the Soldier Best Friend program, showcasing the life-changing impact of the bond between soldiers and their service dogs. The following story exemplifies the profound transformation that can occur:

John, an Army veteran, spent years battling the detrimental effects of PTSD after his return from active duty. His daily life consisted of battling anxiety and panic attacks, making it difficult to function or find solace.

When John was introduced to Max, a compassionate and highly skilled service dog, their connection was instant. Max helped John regain his independence and self-assurance by providing unwavering support and love. The bond they shared brought a sense of stability and happiness back into John's life, allowing him to better manage his PTSD symptoms and partake in activities he thought he had lost forever.

This story is just one example of how the Soldier Best Friend program has changed lives, illustrating the remarkable effect that canine companionship can have on the well-being of soldiers and veterans.

:

The Soldier Best Friend program serves as a beacon of hope for soldiers and veterans, offering support and understanding in their battle against the invisible wounds of war. Through the power of the human-animal bond, these trained service dogs provide constant companionship, unwavering loyalty, and immeasurable comfort. Their ability to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD and TBI, as well as encourage socialization and confidence, is a testament to the transformative role they play in the lives of those they serve.

The Soldier Best Friend program continues to be a vital resource for soldiers and veterans in their journey towards healing and recovery. With their devoted canine partners by their side, these brave individuals can face the challenges of life knowing they have an unbreakable bond with their soldier best friend.

In a Vietnam War memoir unlike any published before, John C. Burnam recalls his service in-country as a scout dog handler in the 25th Infantry Division's 44th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog) with his canine comrades, Hans, Timber, and Clipper. Like 10,000 other young combat infantrymen, Burnam loved and cared for his dogs, literally carrying their food and water into battle, as they located injured GIs, searched out Vietcong weapons caches and deadly booby traps, and alertly thwarted enemy attacks and ambushes. More than 57,000 Americans lost their lives in Vietnam, and countless others were wounded, taken prisoner, or reported missing in action; thousands more would have fallen victim had it not been for the use of German shepherds for scouting, sentry, and patrolling and Labrador retrievers for tracking. Yet these intrepid animals' service has been largely forgotten. In fact, the nearly 4,000 American war dogs of Vietnam were classified as "equipment" at the war's end. Deemed expendable despite the impassioned pleas of their handlers, thousands were abandoned to unknown fates. Vietnam War Dogs is a stirring war story but one that honors the courage of real men and their real best friends. 8 pages of black-and-white photos enhances this superbly written testimonial to the strength and courage of America's soldiers and the heroics of their dog teams during the Vietnam War. "An authentic and compelling story by a two-tour combat infantry veteran. Read this magnificent book." -- Lieutenant General Harold G. Moore (U.S.A., ret.) co-author of We Were Soldiers Once and Young: Ia Drang, The Battle that Changed the War in Vietnam
