Cults can thrive in both educational institutions and religious communities due to the trusting nature of students and congregants. Schools and churches are meant to provide a nurturing environment, but without proper guidance, they can unintentionally become breeding grounds for cult-like behavior.
The Role of Counseling in Combating Cultism
Effective counseling plays a vital role in preventing and countering cultism. By providing guidance, support, and mentorship, counselors can enable individuals to make informed decisions and resist the allure of cult organizations. Counseling aims to empower individuals, enhancing their critical thinking skills, self-esteem, and self-awareness.
Below, we outline the essential steps involved in counseling guidance to tackle cultism:
1. Gaining Trust and Creating a Safe Space
In order to influence positive change, establishing trust is the foundation. Cult victims often feel isolated and apprehensive about seeking help. Counselors must create a secure and non-judgmental environment where individuals can freely express their concerns.
2. Providing Adequate Information
Education is key when it comes to preventing cultism. Counselors must equip individuals with sufficient knowledge about cults, their recruitment techniques, and the potential consequences of joining such organizations. This awareness helps individuals critically evaluate any unsolicited invitations or suspicious activities they encounter.
3. Building Self-Esteem and Personal Identity
One of the underlying reasons individuals are susceptible to cult influence is a lack of self-esteem and personal identity. Counselors must empower individuals by nurturing their self-confidence, encouraging positive self-image, and helping them discover their unique talents and interests.
4. Encouraging Critical Thinking
Cult recruiters utilize manipulative tactics to exploit individuals emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. Cult-proof individuals possess strong critical thinking skills that enable them to analyze information objectively. Counselors must foster critical thinking abilities through various techniques such as brainstorming, logical reasoning, and open dialogue.
5. Providing Emotional Support
Recovering from cult involvement can be emotionally challenging. Counselors must offer ongoing support to individuals as they navigate the healing process. This support involves active listening, empathy, and helping them rebuild healthy relationships outside of the cult.
6. Collaborating with Schools and Churches
Creating a collaborative approach between counselors, schools, and churches is crucial in combating cultism. By working together, practical prevention strategies can be implemented, such as awareness campaigns, workshops, and peer support programs.
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
While counseling guidance is essential in preventing and addressing cultism, prevention remains the key to success. Schools and churches must prioritize a proactive approach by nurturing a inclusive environment, encouraging open dialogue, and promoting critical thinking as part of their educational and spiritual programs.
To truly inspire change and combat cultism effectively, society as a whole must increase awareness and actively work towards creating a safer and healthier environment for individuals to thrive.
Cultism is a growing concern in schools and churches, but through effective counseling guidance, we can make a significant impact. By gaining trust, providing necessary information, building self-esteem, fostering critical thinking, offering emotional support, and collaborating with relevant stakeholders, we can empower individuals to resist the allure of cults.
Remember, prevention is always more effective than cure. By nurturing inclusive environments that promote open dialogue and critical thinking, we can create a culture that deters the influence of harmful cult organizations.
Let us stand together, united against cultism, and ensure a brighter and safer future for our students and worshippers.

t is very worrisome how fast our schools, universities, institution and families have degenerated into the arena of cultistm, murdering, raping, maiming, kidnapping, liars, covetousness. In finding answer to the problems. I realize that these evil practices are just products and a reflection of our families on the lager society. What and who we really are! Our society like any other is the sum total of our communities and families, the families being the most fundamental, most important and is the root. Once the families do not train their children in the way of the Lord, the communities/society become the platform for all types of criminals for which cultism in our schools is one of them. If we lose homes, we lose the nations said D.L Moody. If we fail to train the children, we teach to fail the nations. The bible says train your child in the way of the Lord when he/ she grows old, he/she will not depart from it (proverb 22:6). If we don't teach our children the way of the Lord, the world will teach them the way of Satan and become the teachers of our children. If we had taken marriage and child training as duty and commitment to God, there will be no cultism in our schools. When the foundation is weak the structure can not stand. Parent and communities are therefore the cultists, real roots of cultism and other crimes in the country.
When church produces “almost- Christians” nicked named Christians, instead of disciples then the church cannot Christianize our social system (social, economic and political) and we become nation without Christ, a little less than the jungle. The church leaders, pastors who left their callings to care for the souls and spirit of people but divide their energies and time between their callings and building up treasures are directly producing cultists. They are also culprits; let the truth be said so as to save their souls. God is not interested in the buildings but souls of his people. Treasures are just complimentary after seeking the kingdom of God. Kingdom of God on earth do not produce cultists. Check the names of these cultists, majority bear Christian's names. Did Jesus come to the world to save treasures or souls? You may be on the way to HELL FIRE unless you make 360 degree u-turn. Cultism was not part of our schools culture in the past; it is a sign that our discipleship had failed. We therefore need to turn into New Testament church and follow without cherry- picking. It is only through the church that is Jesus and the Holy Spirit that our society can become normal again.
When government took over the missionary schools, they turned schools into nursery for nursing criminals, cultists, future treasury looters, corrupt rulers, assassins, kidnappers, murders. Our governments share the most guilt. Schools should be returned to the missionaries, churches should build schools affordable to the poor, otherwise the children of the poor will be trapped by the cultists and they will be destroyed and maimed.
