Initially assigned to a small rural parish, Romero developed a deep connection with the impoverished and marginalized communities. His experiences in these communities formed the foundation of his commitment to social justice and defending the rights of the poor.

Appointment as Bishop

In 1970, Romero was appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador. The appointment marked a crucial turning point in his life, as he soon became aware of the grave injustices and atrocities committed during a time of political turmoil in El Salvador.

Romero witnessed the brutal suppression of the poor and the violent suppression of any opposition to the ruling regime. These experiences ignited a fire within him, prompting him to advocate for justice and denounce the oppressive actions of the government.

A Time of Turmoil and Romero's Courageous Stand

During the late 1970s, El Salvador faced escalating violence as various factions fought for power. Romero could not remain silent while the civilians suffered. In his sermons and speeches, he passionately spoke out against the violence, calling for an end to the oppression of the poor.

His courageous stand earned him both praise and condemnation. While some saw him as a beacon of hope and justice, others regarded him as a troublemaker and a danger to the established order. But Romero remained unwavering in his pursuit of justice, knowing that his mission was more significant than personal safety.

The Assassination and Legacy

On March 24, 1980, while delivering a sermon, Archbishop Romero was tragically assassinated by a sniper's bullet. His death shocked the nation, resulting in widespread outrage and grief among the Salvadoran population.

Romero's assassination propelled him into martyrdom and immortalized his legacy. His unwavering commitment to justice and his determination to speak truth to power make him an icon of resistance against oppression and an advocate for the marginalized.

Reflections on Romero's Legacy

Decades later, the memories of Archbishop Romero continue to inspire individuals and organizations involved in the struggle for justice and human rights. His commitment to defending the rights of the poor encourages activists to work tirelessly in their own communities.

Romero's life offers valuable lessons and reflections on justice, compassion, and using one's voice for the betterment of society. His example teaches us that standing up for what is right may come at a great personal cost, but the impact it makes is immeasurable.

The Global Impact of Archbishop Romero

Archbishop Romero's influence extends far beyond the borders of El Salvador. His work and martyrdom captured the attention of people worldwide, rallying support for the Salvadoran people and awakening empathy for the oppressed.

Countless organizations, both religious and secular, continue to honor his memory by championing causes related to social justice, human rights, and advocating for the marginalized. His legacy serves as a reminder of the power and responsibility each individual holds to fight against injustice.

Archbishop Romero's memories and reflections remind us of the importance of speaking out against oppression and standing up for justice. His life serves as a catalyst for change, encouraging generations to come to follow in his footsteps.

As we honor his legacy, it is vital to reflect on our own commitment to justice and the ways in which we can contribute to making the world a better place. Archbishop Romero's memory continues to resonate profoundly, reminding us of the transformative power of resilience, compassion, and unwavering determination to fight for what is right.

Revised to include new essays as well as reflections on the recent beatification of Oscar Romero.

Jon Sobrino, a Jesuit theologian from San Salvador, worked closely with Archbishop Romero and has spent much of the past thirty-five years since his assassination reflecting on the meaning of his extraordinary life and witness. In a moving personal memoir, Sobrino describes how Romero (by reputation a timid, conservative prelate) emerged as the outspoken champion of the poor and suffering people of El Salvador. He then places Romero in the context of the wider church: as believer, as archbishop, as Salvadoran, as prophet, as martyr, as inspiration for theology. Exploring each of these identities in turn, Sobrino sums up his reflections with the : “Archbishop Romero was a gospel . . . a piece of good news from God to the poor of the world
