Religion has always been a fundamental aspect of human society, shaping beliefs, values, and cultural practices. The diversity of religious traditions across the world is a testament to the intricate and complex ways in which people conceptualize and cultivate their spiritual experiences. The Significance of Religion
Religion serves various functions in society, providing individuals with a sense of purpose, guidance, and community. It offers a framework through which people interpret the world around them, the meaning of life, and the existence of a higher power. The beliefs and rituals associated with different religions shape individual identities and influence social interactions on both personal and collective levels.
Throughout history, religion has been a driving force behind political, social, and cultural movements. It has inspired works of art, influenced architecture, and shaped moral codes. From grand cathedrals to serene meditation retreats, religious institutions provide spaces for worship, contemplation, and communal gatherings.

Creating Religious Worlds
Religious worlds are constructed through a complex interplay of individual beliefs, communal practices, and shared experiences. They are dynamic and ever-evolving, reflecting the changing needs and aspirations of believers. These worlds often incorporate elements of myth, symbols, rituals, and narratives that offer followers a sense of transcendence and connection to something greater than themselves.
The religious worlds people create vary greatly from one cultural context to another. From the polytheistic traditions of ancient Greece to the monotheistic practices of the Abrahamic religions, each religion brings with it a unique set of beliefs, rituals, and moral codes. The diversity of religious worlds enriches the human experience and invites individuals to explore different facets of spirituality.
The Field of Religious Studies
Religious studies is an academic discipline dedicated to the scholarly exploration of religious beliefs, practices, and institutions. Scholars in this field employ a multidisciplinary approach, drawing from anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, and other disciplines to deepen their understanding of religious phenomena.
Religious studies scholars investigate a broad range of topics, including the origins of religious traditions, the role of religion in society, and the ways in which religious ideas shape human behavior. They use various research methods, such as textual analysis, ethnographic studies, and archaeological excavations, to piece together the intricate tapestry of religious worlds.
The Scholars Who Study Them

Between Heaven and Earth explores the relationships men, women, and children have formed with the Virgin Mary and the saints in twentieth-century American Catholic history, and reflects, more broadly, on how people live in the company of sacred figures and how these relationships shape the ties between people on earth. In this boldly argued and beautifully written book, Robert Orsi also considers how scholars of religion occupy the ground in between belief and analysis, faith and scholarship.
Orsi infuses his analysis with an autobiographical voice steeped in his own Italian-American Catholic background--from the devotion of his uncle Sal, who had cerebral palsy, to a "crippled saint," Margaret of Castello; to the bond of his Tuscan grandmother with Saint Gemma Galgani.
Religion exists not as a medium of making meanings, Orsi maintains, but as a network of relationships between heaven and earth involving people of all ages as well as the many sacred figures they hold dear. Orsi argues that modern academic theorizing about religion has long sanctioned dubious distinctions between "good" or "real" religious expression on the one hand and "bad" or "bogus" religion on the other, which marginalize these everyday relationships with sacred figures.
This book is a brilliant critical inquiry into the lives that people make, for better or worse, between heaven and earth, and into the ways scholars of religion could better study of these worlds.
