The collection consists of four dramatically engaging plays: "Mozart and Salieri," "The Miserly Knight," "The Stone Guest," and "A Feast During the Plague." Each play explores different themes and emotions, showcasing Pushkin's versatility as a playwright.

The Tragedy of Boris Godunov

At the heart of the collection lies the tragic tale of Boris Godunov, based on historical events from 17th century Russia. The play dives deep into the psychological struggles of Boris, a complex character torn between power, guilt, and his own inner demons.

With vivid descriptions and poetic language, Pushkin presents a compelling narrative that delves into themes of ambition, morality, and fate. Through Boris' internal conflict, the play sheds light on the human condition, making it relatable to audiences across time.

Mozart and Salieri – The Battle of Genius

Inspired by a popular rumor, "Mozart and Salieri" revolves around the imagined rivalry between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, two of history's most renowned composers. Pushkin weaves a captivating story exploring the depths of envy, talent, and artistic creation.

As the plot unfolds, the audience is drawn into the intense emotions experienced by Salieri as he confronts his jealousy towards Mozart's unparalleled talent. The play raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of genius and the effects of one's own limitations.

The Miserly Knight – A Tale of Obsession

"The Miserly Knight" tells the tale of an eccentric and wealthy knight named Tchartkoff. Driven by greed and a deep obsession with material possessions, Tchartkoff's character presents a profound exploration of moral decay and its consequences.

Pushkin masterfully examines the inner workings of a man consumed by his own wealth, creating a captivating narrative that forces the audience to reflect on their own desires and the potential pitfalls of pursuing material wealth at any cost.

The Stone Guest – Love, Betrayal, and Revenge

"The Stone Guest" explores the tragic love story of Donna Anna and Don Juan, a classic tale intertwined with elements of revenge and redemption. Pushkin's adaptation of this timeless narrative delves deep into the complexities of human relationships and their intricate dynamics.

With captivating dialogues and intense confrontations, the play investigates the consequences of passionate love, betrayal, and the pursuit of justice. The themes presented in "The Stone Guest" continue to resonate with audiences today.

A Feast During the Plague – A Glimpse into the Human Psyche

The final play in the collection, "A Feast During the Plague," presents a harrowing story set in the midst of a deadly epidemic. Pushkin's narrative explores the deep-rooted fears, desires, and moral dilemmas that arise during times of crisis.

By putting human nature to the ultimate test, the play offers a compelling reflection on the fragility of life, the choices we make, and the consequences they entail. Pushkin's eloquence and poetic prowess shine throughout, making it a memorable addition to the collection.

Boris Godunov Little Tragedies and Others stands as a testament to the brilliance of Alexander Pushkin. Through his captivating storytelling and exploration of complex human emotions, Pushkin crafted a collection that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Whether exploring the psychological struggles of Boris Godunov or delving into the themes of envy, greed, love, and morality, these timeless plays offer a profound and thought-provoking experience. Boris Godunov Little Tragedies and Others is undoubtedly a masterpiece that transcends time.

The award-winning translators bring us the complete plays of the most acclaimed Russian writer of the Romantic era.

Alexander Pushkin, known as the father of Russian literature, was equally skilled at poetry, stories, and dramas. The most famous of his plays is Boris Godunov (later adapted into a popular opera by Mussorgsky),a tale of ambition and murder centered on the sixteenth-century Tsar who preceded the Romanovs. Pushkin was inspired by the example of Shakespeare to create this panoramic historical drama, with its richly varied cast of characters and artful blend of comic and tragic scenes.

Accompanying his masterpiece are all of Pushkin’s other, shorter forays into verse drama:
The Water Nymph, A Scene from Faust, and the four brief dramas collectively known as the Little Tragedies: The Miserly Knight, set in medieval France; Mozart and Salieri, which inspired the popular film Amadeus; The Stone Guest, a tale of Don Juan in Madrid; and A Feast in a Time of Plague, which is set in London during the plague-ridden summer of 1665, among a group of revelers defiantly disregarding quarantine. These miniature plays illuminate the cardinal sins of greed, envy, lust, and pride, but despite their brevity they are animated by the intensity and complexity of their protagonists’ inner lives.
