Dalits: Rediscovering the Tales of the Past, Unveiling the Present, and Shaping the Future
When we talk about the rich cultural tapestry of India, it is impossible to overlook the significant contributions and struggles of the Dalits. Dalits, formerly known as "untouchables" or Scheduled Castes, have been an integral part of Indian society for centuries. This article aims to delve deep into their past, shed light on their current challenges, and envision a future where Dalits are truly empowered and celebrated.
The Historical Context: An Era of Oppression
To understand the significance of Dalits in today's India, we must first acknowledge their tumultuous history. Dalits have endured centuries of discrimination, marginalization, and social exclusion. They were treated as social outcasts, often relegated to performing menial jobs considered "polluting" by the caste system. This dehumanizing practice has denied Dalits basic human rights, limiting their access to education, healthcare, and equal opportunities.
Historically, Dalits were forbidden from entering temples, schools, and accessing public spaces meant exclusively for the upper castes. They were subjected to acts of violence, denial of land rights, and overall exploitation by the dominant castes. This deeply ingrained societal hierarchy has perpetuated discrimination against Dalits, leading to a cycle of generational oppression.

The Present Struggles: Breaking the Chains
While India has made significant progress in terms of legislations and affirmative action, many deep-rooted issues persist. Dalits continue to face systemic discrimination, violence, and economic exploitation. The reported cases of discrimination range from denying Dalits access to public resources to cases of caste-based violence and discrimination in educational institutions and workplaces.
One of the biggest challenges faced by Dalits today is the caste-based prejudice that still exists within the society. Despite legal protections against untouchability, Dalits are often subjected to social boycott, discrimination, and violence. Intercaste marriages are frequently met with resistance, leading to honor killings or ostracization from their own communities.
Education, which holds the key to social mobility, remains an area of concern for Dalits. While government policies have aimed to increase access to education, discrimination and prejudice within schools and colleges still impede Dalit students' progress. Scholarships and educational support initiatives have helped uplift many, but the road to educational equality is long and arduous.
The Rising Resistance: Dalit Movement for Equality
In the face of immense challenges, the Dalit community has not stayed silent. They have organized themselves into powerful movements, demanding justice, equality, and social reform. Leaders like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who himself belonged to the Dalit community, have been instrumental in championing the rights of Dalits and providing a strong voice against discrimination.
Over the years, various Dalit organizations have emerged, working tirelessly to empower the community and challenge oppressive structures. These organizations aim to create awareness, provide legal support, and promote education and economic opportunities for Dalits. They have also been instrumental in fostering solidarity among Dalits and forging alliances with progressive social activists to fight against injustice.
Creating a Brighter Future: Empowerment and Inclusion
As we contemplate the future for Dalits, it is essential to focus on holistic empowerment and inclusive growth. There can be no lasting change without dismantling the caste system, challenging regressive mindsets, and fostering empathy and acceptance among all sections of society.
Educational institutions must actively work towards creating a safe and inclusive environment for Dalit students. Anti-discrimination policies must be strictly enforced, and awareness campaigns highlighting the contributions and potential of Dalits should be initiated. Collaborative efforts between civil society, academia, and the government are crucial in bridging the educational gap and providing equal opportunities for all.
Economic empowerment is another critical aspect of Dalit upliftment. Government initiatives to provide skill-based training, entrepreneurship support, and reserved quotas in public and private sectors need to be continued and strengthened. Encouraging and enabling Dalits to actively participate in economic activities will help break the cycle of poverty and oppression.
: Embracing Equality and Celebrating Diversity
The journey of Dalits from the past to the present has been one of resilience and resistance. While progress has been made, the battle against caste-based discrimination is far from over. True empowerment lies in creating a society that recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, irrespective of their caste or background.
By working towards an inclusive future where Dalits are afforded equal opportunities and rights, India can truly celebrate its diversity and create a more just and harmonious society. The path may be challenging, but the goal is nothing short of transformative change – a future where the Dalits can reclaim their rightful place as equals, shaping a brighter destiny for themselves and generations to come.

This book is a comprehensive to Dalits in India from their origin to the present day. Despite a plethora of provisions for affirmative action in the Indian Constitution, Dalits still suffer exclusion on various counts. The book traces the multifarious changes that befell them through history, germination of Dalit consciousness during the colonial period and its f lowering under the legendary leadership of Babasaheb Ambedkar. It provides critical insights to their degeneration during the post-Ambedkar period, taking stock of all significant developments therein such as the rise of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Dalit capitalism, NGOization of the Dalit discourse and the various implicit or explicit emancipation schemas thrown up by them. It also discusses ideology, implicit strategy and tactics of the Dalit movement, touches upon one of the most contentious issues of increasing divergence between the Dalit and Marxist movements, and delineates the role of the state, both colonial and post-colonial, in shaping Dalit politics in particular ways.
This new edition includes a new chapter providing the causal analysis of the rise of Hindutva under Narendra Modi, its fascist march obliterating the idea of India sketched out by the Constitution, and forecasts its future as the Hindu Rashtra – the Brahmanic-fascist state – which has been the goal of its progenitors.
A tour de force, this book brings to the fore many key contemporary concerns and will be of great interest to activists, students, scholars and teachers of politics, political economy, sociology, anthropology, history and social exclusion studies.
