This book was created specifically for those who speak some French, or can at least pronounce it, and would like to use it as a teaching tool to provide a framework that covers the most commonly used French words. It will work best for parents, grandparents and other caregivers or teachers who speak at least some French and would like to help their children or students learn this beautiful language (and perhaps refresh their own French along the way). It introduces several hundred of the most commonly spoken French words and could therefore also be useful to older readers who would like to learn some basic vocabulary before a visit to a French-speaking country. Each page has beautiful images labeled in French and sections that give additional information or use the words in simple sentences and common French expressions.
Intended to be a primer or to French, it does not explain grammar in any detail (although it would be helpful to know what an adjective, noun, pronoun and verb are) and is more of a fun book that will help readers to absorb some basic French. In order to make it as visually appealing and as simple as possible, there are no phonetic pronunciation guidelines, which is why it will help if you already have a rudimentary knowledge of how to pronounce French letter sequences. This is also why it is best used as a framework for French speakers to teach French and to provide structure. If you would like to use the book for learning French and don’t know how to pronounce the words, you will need to listen to a French speaker. To do this, you can type a word into google followed by “French pronunciation”, or go straight to google translate with French selected as the first language and then click on the speaker symbol. This can also be useful for word reinforcement.
Each page covers anywhere from ten to twenty or more words, so you may need to spend more than one day on each page. However, it’s also possible to browse the whole book, or pick a subject and go to that first, as long as you can pronounce the words or are prepared to use google to hear the correct pronunciation. Although the book does progress from basic to more complex by the end, it is also possible to pick a subject like food or transport and concentrate on that without having to learn everything in the previous pages first. This also makes it perfect for short lessons or as part of a bedtime story to help a child to become more confident with French and give them a head start at school.
Anyone who has learned another language knows that it simply is not possible to become fluent quickly without a full immersion experience such as one obtains by living in a French-speaking country. Learning a new language takes effort and perseverance and a lot of repetition, a bit like learning to play an instrument. Many people learn a few key words but are unable to put them together to make a sentence. That is why unlike a picture dictionary, this book includes all those simple words that stitch a language together, as well as the most common verbs. These are mostly illustrated in the present tense, although there is a brief to the past (perfect) tense.
If you want to learn very basic French vocabulary but find most French books and apps too daunting, then this may work well for you. If you learn all of the words in this book, it won’t make you fluent but it will be a great starting point for learning French in more detail, or at the very least provide you with some useful knowledge, words and phrases for a visit to France.
