The Western Snake River Plain is a mesmerizing region located in the northwestern part of the United States. This vast area boasts a rich geological history that spans millions of years, offering a fascinating glimpse into the forces of nature that have shaped our planet.

Stretching over 10,000 square miles in southern Idaho, the Western Snake River Plain is a remarkable testament to the power of volcanic activity. It is believed to be one of the largest volcanic provinces in the world, playing a significant role in the formation of the region's unique geological features.

The Western Snake River Plain is primarily composed of a volcanic plateau that is characterized by extensive lava flows, cinder cones, and volcanic fissures. These features are the result of volcanic eruptions that occurred during different periods in the Earth's history.

Exploring the Diverse Geological Formations of the Western Snake River Plain

The most prominent volcanic activity in the region happened approximately 15 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. Huge quantities of basaltic lava erupted from fissure vents, covering the landscape with layer upon layer of solidified lava flows. Today, these lava flows create a spectacular visual tapestry, with their dark hues contrasting against the surrounding landscapes.

The volcanic eruptions also gave rise to the towering cinder cones that dot the Western Snake River Plain. These cone-shaped volcanic formations are made up of fragmented volcanic material such as ash, cinders, and volcanic bombs. Standing tall, they serve as iconic landmarks that remind us of the region's explosive past.

In addition to the volcanic features, the Western Snake River Plain is also home to several river systems that have played a crucial role in shaping the landscape. The Snake River, which runs through the plain, has carved out deep canyons and created expansive valleys. Its erosive power has contributed to the formation of breathtaking landscapes such as the Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America.

The Western Snake River Plain is not just a geological wonderland; it also hosts a diverse range of ecosystems. The unique combination of volcanic and hydrological features has created a fertile ground for a variety of flora and fauna to thrive. From lush wetlands to arid high desert climates, the region offers a haven for numerous plant and animal species.

As we delve deeper into the geology of the Western Snake River Plain, we uncover a wealth of scientific knowledge that helps us understand the Earth's intricate processes. By studying the rock formations, fossil records, and the ongoing volcanic activity in the region, geologists can piece together the puzzle of our planet's history and gain insights into its future.

The Western Snake River Plain trends northwest and is considered to be a fault bounded depression with normal faults forming major segments along both edges of the plain. Lacustrine sediments occur above thick basaltic sequences with some inter-bedded sediments mixed with basalt flows. The Western Snake River Plain and the Nevada rift developed as a continuous rift 17 million years ago. The WSRP upper crust was thinned or pulled apart as major extension began about 17 million years ago and the resulting depression was filled with up welling basalt and debris from the adjoining highlands.

Chapter 1 presents an overview of the Snake River Plain as a product of the Yellowstone Hot Spot Theory. Features of each segment are described. Chapter 2 discusses the geophysics and tectonics of the SRP providing an overview and geologic setting of the western, central, and eastern SRP. Chapter 3 begins the discussion of the Western Snake River Plain addressing the geologic setting of structure and tectonics, sedimentation, and lacustrine sequences. Chapter 4 discusses the origin and evolution of the WSRP dealing with stratigraphy and volcanic units, structural faulting, and geochemistry. Chapter 5 presents a field trip discussion involving a cross sectional trace through the WSRP starting in the Owyhee Mountains extending into the Boise foothills. Ten stops are presented.
