The Hidden Treasures Beneath Our Feet: Unleashing the Potential of Economic Geology and Applied Geophysics
Economic Geology and Applied Geophysics are two fascinating fields that have immense importance in understanding the Earth's resources and unlocking their true potential. Regional Geology Reviews play a vital role in analyzing the geological makeup of specific regions, providing valuable insights into the distribution and characteristics of minerals, fuels, and other valuable materials. In this article, we will delve into the intriguing world of Economic Geology and Applied Geophysics, exploring how they shape our understanding of our planet's hidden treasures.
The Significance of Economic Geology
Economic Geology is the study of Earth materials that have commercial or economic value. It involves evaluating the availability, distribution, and quality of various resources, including metals, minerals, gemstones, fuels, and water. Through advanced analytical techniques and extensive fieldwork, economic geologists identify potential deposit sites, estimate their yield and economic viability, and develop sound strategies for extraction.

Understanding the geology of an area is crucial in predicting the occurrence of mineral deposits. Economic geologists analyze rock formations, mineral assemblages, and geochemical patterns to decipher the geological processes that shaped the region and influenced mineralization. By applying their knowledge of structural geology and mineralogy, they can locate areas with potential mineral resources, such as gold, copper, coal, oil, and natural gas.
The Role of Applied Geophysics
Applied Geophysics complements Economic Geology by employing techniques to probe the subsurface in search of valuable resources. It involves the use of various geophysical methods, including seismic, magnetic, gravity, and electrical surveys, to map subsurface structures and identify potential deposits. By studying the properties of rocks and their responses to different geophysical signals, applied geophysicists can create detailed subsurface models.
Seismic surveys, for instance, use sound waves to image subsurface structures. By analyzing the travel times and reflections of these waves, geophysicists can estimate the depth, thickness, and lithology of geological units. Magnetic and gravity surveys help detect subsurface variations in magnetic and gravitational fields caused by mineral deposits. Electrical surveys measure the resistivity of rocks, helping identify conductive materials like minerals and hydrocarbons.
The Importance of Regional Geology Reviews
Regional Geology Reviews provide comprehensive assessments of the geological makeup of specific regions. These reviews play a significant role in identifying potential mineral resources, determining their economic feasibility, and guiding exploration efforts. By integrating information from various disciplines, such as geology, geochemistry, geophysics, and remote sensing, regional geologists gather a holistic understanding of the geological evolution of an area.
These reviews document the geological history, tectonic evolution, structural framework, and sedimentary processes of a region. They identify critical geological formations and describe their lithology, mineralization potential, and geological risks. By studying the distribution and characteristics of different rock units, regional geologists can interpret the geological features that influence the deposition of economically valuable materials.
Economic Geology and Applied Geophysics contribute immensely to our understanding of the Earth's resources and help us exploit them sustainably. Regional Geology Reviews serve as valuable guides in the exploration and development of these resources by providing crucial insights into the geological makeup of specific regions. Together, these fields unlock the hidden treasures beneath our feet, driving economic growth and shaping our world. Understanding economic geology and applied geophysics is crucial for building a sustainable future, utilizing Earth's resources wisely, and protecting our planet's delicate balance.

This book provides a review of Azerbaijan’s water reserves and main economic deposits (both hydrocarbon and hard) and describes the integrated application of geophysical methods (land, airborne, shipborne and satellite) for studying near-surface and environmental features and regional tectonic-geophysical zonation as well as the study of deep structures in the search for hydrocarbon and hard (polymetallic, copper, gold-bearing, iron-ore, magnetite, etc.) deposits. It particularly focuses on the geophysical examination of seismic activity in the region related to the interaction of the Afro-Arabian and Eurasian lithospheric plates.
It is aimed at scientists, engineers and students interested in the commercial potential of Azerbaijan’s deposits and the application of different geophysical methodologies (gravity, magnetic, seismic, thermal, electric, electromagnetic, etc.) for analyzing mud volcanism, identifying subsurface structures (including the analysis of hydrogeological problems, the examination of past climates and archaeological inspection) revealing the deep tectono-structural peculiarities of the region under study, mining and oil & gas geophysics, development of 3D physical-geological models and advanced seismological prognosis.
