Sites such as Stonehenge, Avebury, and Skara Brae continue to leave us in awe as we try to comprehend the skill and knowledge possessed by the people who constructed them. These ancient monuments served religious, ceremonial, or astronomical purposes, and their significance continues to captivate our modern minds.

But it wasn't just the structures that tell us tales from the past. Archaeological excavations have unearthed tools, pottery, and bones, revealing the everyday lives of our ancestors. These precious artifacts enable us to understand how people survived, their rituals, and ways of communication.

The Warlike People: Prehistoric Britons and Their Battles

Prehistoric Britain was far from a peaceful era. Evidence suggests that the people who inhabited these lands engaged in intense battles and territorial disputes. Weapons such as swords, spears, and daggers have been found in burial sites, indicating that warfare was a significant aspect of their society.

One notable discovery is the Amesbury Archer, a skeleton dating back to around 2300 BC. This individual was buried with a quiver full of flint-tipped arrows, suggesting a warrior of immense importance. It is believed that he was either a skilled hunter or even a warrior chief.

Moreover, ancient hillforts, such as Maiden Castle and Danebury, provide a glimpse into fortified communities where battles were fought and strategies were crafted. These structures were of utmost importance, serving as a refuge during conflicts and a symbol of power.

Untangling the Mysteries of Prehistoric Britain's Religion

Religious beliefs played a significant role in the lives of people in prehistoric times. Various burial customs and ceremonial artifacts reveal their deep-seated spirituality. Druids, a priestly class, are associated with Pre-Roman Britain and held immense influence over religious matters.

A hilltop monument known as Silbury Hill has been interpreted as a sacred site that hosted religious ceremonies. Its purpose and significance, however, remain shrouded in mystery. These ancient people venerated natural elements, such as the sun, moon, and earth, and their rituals and practices may have formed the roots of later pagan traditions.

The tremendous effort and symbolism embedded within these religious sites underline the importance of faith in Prehistoric Britain. Exploring their beliefs helps us understand the complex tapestry of their lives, connecting us with our ancestral roots.

The Arrival of Metal: A Transformative Period

Around 2500 BC, a significant shift occurred in Prehistoric Britain โ€“ the transition to the Bronze Age. The arrival of bronze, a metal alloy of copper and tin, revolutionized their tools, weapons, and jewelry. Evidence of the Bronze Age can be found in burial sites and hoards discovered across the country.

The newfound metal brought increased power, as well as social and economic changes. Communities thrived through trade, where tin from Cornwall and copper from Wales were transported and crafted into valuable implements.

This era also witnessed the construction of hillforts, indicating a response to changing dynamics and potential conflicts. Hillforts became centers of power and were often occupied by an elite ruling class.

The Legacy Lives On

Prehistoric Britain holds an enduring legacy that continues to shape our understanding of the past. From the awe-inspiring stone circles to the battles fought in fortified communities, each discovery allows us to piece together the story of our ancestors.

As we unearth more secrets hidden beneath the earth's surface, our knowledge of Prehistoric Britain grows richer. The enigma of this momentous period in history beckons us to explore further, to delve deep into the mysteries that lie dormant until discovered.

Are you ready to embark on an incredible journey through time? Uncover the secrets of Prehistoric Britain and marvel at the remarkable achievements of our long-lost ancestors.

Much of Britain was covered by ice during several โ€œIce Agesโ€ over the last 500,000 years. The most recent one ended only 10,000 years ago. Glaciers and ice sheets scoured the landscape, wearing away the rocks to form glacial landscapes in the Scottish Highlands, Lake District and N. Wales. In the coldest periods, the ice would have been hundreds of metres thick, and reached as far south as London. Material eroded by the ice was left behind as the glaciers retreated, forming Boulder Clay (till) deposits that cover many parts of eastern England.

Geologists have assumed that these glaciers melted due to warming in climatic conditions creating a series of 'meltwater pulses' over a short period of time, but they have failed to date to produce a realistic model that fits the total meltwater discharge which eventually created not only the North and Irish Seas but the hundreds of feet of sea-level rises that we are still experiencing today. If you study any British Geological Society (BGS) map of Britain, you will notice it shows a series of bedrock, sedimentary and superficial deposits.
Below these deposits, is a labyrinth of material that look like canals and gigantic waterways which lay under the surface on top of the bedrock, which is the remains of Palaeochannels from the last ice age. This evidence is a testament to how the landscape would have looked when the rivers were at their highest and when they were discharging at their maximum levels.
