In 2017, Hurricane Harvey dumped 40 inches of rain on Katy, Texas in a three day period and destroyed the homes of over 14,000 families. The vast majority were displaced for several days as the waters receded. Once they receded, Harvey left a wake of destruction across our community. Throughout the disaster I worked in rescue operations for a week and spent the next three months assisting with clean up and home restoration. I coordinated boats in rescue operations, participated in rescues, helped set up a High School as a shelter, organized evacuation sites for flood victims coming out of the water, assisted in the development of housing and supply centers for displaced neighbors, organized and managed teams doing clean up, and gave advice on systems and structures to assist impacted neighbors in the restoration of their home. This book is an awesome resource for those who experienced Harvey themselves as well as anyone who wants to develop assistance structures in future flood related disasters. I have included Leadership Lesson I learned through this experience that will help anyone serving in a leadership role. It is also a handbook for churches and service organizations that want to make a difference when disaster strikes. It is autobiographical and chronological and is written in a warm, compelling voice.
