Kashmir, with its mixed population of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs, faced a difficult decision. Its ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh, initially decided to remain independent. However, as tensions rose, he eventually agreed to join India in exchange for military assistance against the invading tribesmen from Pakistan.

The Three Major Wars:
