And finally, after decades of oppression and struggle, India emerged victorious. In this article, we delve into the riveting account of India’s freedom fight, aptly narrated in India Wins Freedom by Jeni Wittrock.
The Long-Awaited Promise of Independence
For centuries, India had been subjugated by foreign powers, enduring colonial rule and bearing the burden of exploitation. However, the call for freedom grew louder as influential leaders emerged, rallying the masses towards an independent India.

The Birth of a Revolution
The Quit India Movement of 1942 marked a turning point in India’s struggle for independence. With the influential call of "Do or Die," the entire nation rose in unison against British rule. The movement was characterized by civil disobedience, strikes, and demonstrations, effectively paralyzing the colonial administration. The Indian National Congress took center stage, with leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad, and Sardar Patel leading the charge.
But the struggle was not without its challenges. The British responded with brutal force, incarcerating thousands of freedom fighters, including Gandhi himself. However, the resilience of the Indian people and their unyielding demand for self-rule could not be quelled.
Shaping India’s Future
India’s path to independence was further defined by the Partition of 1947. The British decision to divide India into two separate nations, India and Pakistan, resulted in mass migrations and communal violence. The violent aftermath of partition left scars that would take years to heal, but it also highlighted the strength and spirit of the Indian people.
Despite numerous obstacles, India finally achieved independence on August 15, 1947. In his iconic speech, India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, expressed the nation’s immense gratitude for the sacrifices made and the determination exhibited by its citizens. He called for unity, progress, and a commitment to democracy, as India faced the daunting task of building a new nation.

One of the makers of modern India tells the story of the partition of India as never before, with intimate knowledge and feeling. India Wins Freedom has at last won its own freedom. The full text of this autobiographical narrative was confined, under seal, in the National Library, Calcutta, and in the National Archives, New Delhi, for thirty years. What we now have is the complete text, released in September 1988, by a court directive. Not only have all the words and phrases of the original been reproduced, the original tone and temper have been fully restored. The text now reveals that the controversy that has simmered for so long about the hitherto unpublished pages, was fully justified.
