Lost in the Highlands of Translation is a publication brought to market to extend the reach of Scottish Traditional Folk Tales. Stories told many years ago, with authors and dates unknown, these would have been traditionally shared through spoken word. Here it is taken further with the translation into German presented alongside the Scots.

Originally this work was written by Emilie Calvert, an academically qualified translator, as a component in her Master's Dissertation in 2017.

*Folk Tales Included*

‘This year, we're combining our ancient monuments, famous battlefields and traditions with a celebration of our legendary myths, folklore and unearthed gems in the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017’ (‘Welcome to Scotland’). As a contribution to this homage to Scottish culture – advertised, amongst others, by Scotland’s national tourist board VisitScotland – I decided to dedicate my dissertation to Scottish folktales. They form an important part of Scotland’s culture and are kept alive to this day through the dedication of institutions such as the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh. In today’s globalised world, it has become much easier for cultural material to cross national borders – for example through the internet. As part of this spreading of culture which, most of the time, requires the work of a translator, I set out to translate six Scottish folk narratives, the source texts (STs),from English into German, so as to make them accessible outside of Scotland and more specifically, to native speakers of German. The resulting target texts (TTs) are aimed at the most enthusiastic of audiences: children.
