One theory about memory retention holds that we never lose our memories. Rather, we store our memories in a drawer of our brain, but we merely cannot retrieve them.
My oldest recollection is of something relating to Manchuria (currently northeastern China) and Manchukuo, a puppet state of Japan that existed for only 14 years from 1932 to 1945.
This essay is a short memoir of mine. I am one person who was born in 1944, in a “country that no longer exists,” and then repatriated to Japan in 1946. The memoir is based on my fragmentary memories, together with my family’s stories.
Seventy three years have passed since World War II ended, and it seems most Japanese have already forgotten the war, even though Japan was deeply involved in the war. By writing about a civilian’s war experience, I would like as many people around the world as possible to know the fact that there is no good war.
