Author Louise Jordan Miln was a successful actress. She and her husband’s theater company toured from Australia to Asia. Through this travel, she fell in love with Asia and wrote about it. Quaint Korea was one of them. Louise started to write on Korea six years later she visited. Besides her memory, she researched and referred other books on Korea. It is interesting to see she defended Korea women from a woman’s perspective. We can assume it from her book that the life of Korean people who had lived the most tragic period of history.
It seems Louise Jordan Miln visited Korea around in 1888, and her book came out in 1895. Korea suffered from the war between China and Japan, which broke out in her soil. It was a dark period for Korea losing its light to Japan. Louise predicted the tragedy of Korea in the book. Fifteen years later, the people of Korea lost their sovereignty to Japan by force. (1910) It became the traumatizing history of Korean people ever. Louise truly felt sorry for Korea.
