Garvey joined the SFFD thirty years ago, fresh out of the Fire Academy. From the very beginning, his passion for firefighting was evident. He quickly rose through the ranks, exhibiting unparalleled skills and a remarkable intuition during emergency situations. Garvey's commitment to excellence and his never-ending thirst for knowledge made him an outstanding firefighter and a natural leader within the department.

One of the most challenging experiences in Garvey's career was the devastating earthquake that struck San Francisco in 1989. The Loma Prieta earthquake wreaked havoc on the city, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. Garvey was on the front lines, working tirelessly to rescue trapped individuals, extinguish fires, and restore calm amidst the chaos. His bravery and tenacity during that trying time saved numerous lives and earned him the respect of his fellow firefighters.

In addition to his heroic actions during emergencies, Garvey has contributed significantly to the SFFD's training and education programs. He believes that constant improvement and staying up-to-date with the latest techniques are crucial in facing the ever-evolving challenges posed by fires and emergencies. Garvey's expertise and emphasis on safety have helped shape a new generation of firefighters, ensuring the continued excellence of the SFFD.

When asked about his motivations and what drives him to put his life on the line every day, Garvey replied, "It's the people of this city whom we protect that keep me going. Their trust in us, their gratitude when we save lives or property, that's what fuels my passion." His words reflect the deep bond he shares with the people of San Francisco, a bond built on trust, respect, and an unwavering commitment to public safety.

Garvey's dedication extends beyond his work as a firefighter. He actively participates in community outreach programs, sharing his experiences and knowledge with aspiring firefighters and educating the public about fire safety. His passion for serving others is not limited to the confines of his profession, but stretches into the heart of the city's neighborhoods and schools.

In recognition of his outstanding service, Garvey has been honored with numerous awards, including the San Francisco Firefighter of the Year and the Medal of Valor. However, he remains humble, always acknowledging the collective efforts of his fellow firefighters and the unwavering support of the entire city.

As San Francisco continues to flourish, the city can rest assured knowing that heroes like John Garvey are on duty, ready to protect and serve. His dedication, bravery, and indomitable spirit are what make the San Francisco Fire Department a force to be reckoned with.

John Garvey's story is a testament to the extraordinary men and women who risk their lives every day to keep our communities safe. His legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of San Franciscans, reminding us all of the true essence of heroism – selflessness, courage, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.

In San Francisco, history is as close as the sound of the fire engines and trucks racing by, sirens wailing. The San Francisco Fire Department took shape, as did the city, from the ashes and embers of the Great Fire of 1906. In the tumultuous seaport full of those seeking California's newly found gold, volunteer fire companies had to adapt to a teeming city full of canvas tents, wood shacks, kerosene lanterns, ocean breezes, and hilly winding streets. From a force that initially pulled hand-operated pumps and competed to be the first at a fire, traveling in horse-drawn equipment, the department has grown from a volunteer contingent of a few hundred to a company 1,800 strong and equipped to protect a city of 49 square miles, surrounded on three sides by salt water. The historic photographs of this volume document the establishment of the volunteer department on Christmas Eve 1849 and the inception of the paid force in 1866, as well as such colorful characters as Lily Hitchcock Coit, a belle who battled many a blaze with the volunteers and a portion of whose estate went to build the 210-foot Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill. Striking images, many never before published, illustrate how the fire department was affected not only by the well-known inferno of 1906 but by the six blazes that leveled the waterfront in the 1850s and a number of other fires throughout the city's history.
