There were a couple of things I hadn’t realized: (1) That the Southeastern United States is the “Bible belt,” and much more receptive to our message than the other places we’ve been; and,

(2) We hadn’t realized that New Orleans has a large and vocal gay community - San Francisco on a smaller scale. And, like San Francisco, they’d been picketing our host church anyway. When Chris showed up, they knew there’d be lots of publicity, so they came out in force, and made a lot of commotion.

Chris had known they’d be there, and had warned Mr. Wintesheim that there’d be “a fight,” so to be sure a camera crew was there to cover it.

Well, at 6:45 Chris walked out front, carrying his Testament, and tried to preach to the gay crowd. He was being fairly forthright. He said that “sodomy” was an “abomination,” and that you must “repent or be damned,” and “turn or burn.”

Suddenly, out of the crowd, a knife came hurtling at him, and stuck in his chest. Chris didn’t fall; he didn’t even look surprised. He simply pulled it out, and held it up. The knife was dripping blood; but Chris wasn’t bleeding. Indeed, he lifted his tee shirt and showed them that there was no wound, and no scar.

Then he sneered at them and taunted, “Look, you idiots, you haven’t been listening to me. I told you - I’m invincible, until I finish the work God has for me to do. God protects me, and you can’t kill me; you can’t even hurt me - and you’re wasting your time trying.

“Now, Javi Morales, you come up here and get your knife.” When no one stepped forward, Chris pointed at one guy and said, “I’m talking to you. Do you want me to call the cops, and have you arrested? You’d better come here and talk to me, if you don’t want to get in trouble!”

At that point, the crowd shoved one kid - and he did appear to be a kid; actually, he was seventeen, but was small for his age, and looked a lot younger, maybe fourteen or so - forward, and the rest of the gays took off, real quick. The kid looked completely befuddled and uncertain what to do.

Twelve year old Billy Martin has been suddenly uprooted from the only home he knows, in liberal Stockholm, and sent to live with his eighteen year old brother, Bob, who has recently joined an ultra-conservative religious group in Idaho.Billy, a high-spirited youth, has been allowed to run at loose ends for his entire life, and has never experienced discipline of any kind. He now finds himself in a vastly different world. Bob immediately sets about bringing his kid brother into line, and giving him the “Biblical discipline” that he, and the other sect members, consider essential to proper child rearing. Billy strives to come to grips with the new reality.

While the characters are wholly imaginary, the issues they confront are real, and threaten to undermine the very foundations of our civilization. This work does not contain any erotic material, but is a sobering assessment of today’s child rearing practices in the United States and Western Europe.

This is the forty-first volume of a more extensive saga, which traces the course of Billy and his friends as they struggle through the years of adolescence. It should be required reading for every adolescent boy, his parents, and all those who seek to influence him.
