Set in rural Oklahoma, Tashka the Warrior Dog is the story of a boy named Mollis who struggles with being called names at school because of his fears and because of his unusual name. One day when Mollis comes home from school his Imafo (Choctaw for grandfather) sees that he is upset. Imafo tries to help Mollis deal with his fears by telling him the story of Tashka the Warrior Dog. Imafo tells Mollis how Tashka came to be in Oklahoma, the origin of her name, and how Tashka overcame her fears. Using the story of Tashka, Imafo helps comfort Mollis as he deals with being called names at school. In the Native American tradition, Imafo also gives Mollis a secret name to help him overcome his fears.

Young children enjoy learning words in different languages. This book introduces children to the Choctaw language. At the beginning of the book is a list of 7 words in Choctaw that children are introduced to in the story.

Included at the end of the book is a short history of the Choctaw Nation, how they came to be in southeastern Oklahoma, and how the tribe is governed. This helps children gain some insight into the modern Native American culture.

Tashka the Warrior Dog is the first in a series of books using modern Native American children to address issues that are faced by all children while exposing the children to the language of the Choctaw Nation, their history, and their culture.
