Why Evangelical Christians Oppose Action On Climate Change
The Intersection of Faith and Environmental Issues
Climate change is undoubtedly one of the most pressing issues of our time. Scientists, activists, and policymakers across the globe acknowledge the need for immediate action to mitigate its damaging effects. However, within certain religious communities, particularly Evangelical Christians, there is opposition to the idea of taking action on climate change. This article aims to explore why some Evangelical Christians hold this view and the factors influencing their opposition.
Religious Interpretations and End-Times Theology
One of the primary reasons behind Evangelical Christian opposition to climate change action lies in their interpretation of biblical teachings. Many adherents believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible, including the notion of the end of times or the return of Christ. This belief system often leads to a dismissal of environmental concerns as they are seen as insignificant compared to spiritual matters. Additionally, some interpret passages from the Bible as supporting human dominance over the Earth, leading to a lack of urgency in addressing environmental issues.

Political Affiliation and Skepticism of Scientific Consensus
Another factor contributing to Evangelical Christian opposition to climate change action is their political affiliation. Many Evangelicals align themselves with conservative ideologies, which often include skepticism towards scientific consensus on climate change. This skepticism, coupled with a focus on limited government intervention, translates into resistance to policies aimed at addressing climate change. Some Evangelicals view environmental policies as encroachments on individual freedoms or as potential threats to the free market.
Economic Interests and Industry Influence
In some cases, opposition to action on climate change among Evangelical Christians can be traced back to economic interests and industry influence. Certain sectors, such as fossil fuels and agriculture, may have a significant presence in communities populated by Evangelicals. These industries often rely on practices that contribute to climate change, and any action to combat it could potentially impact their profits. As a result, Evangelicals living in these areas may resist climate change action to protect local jobs and the economy.
Mistrust of Environmentalism and Population Control
Evangelical Christians often express mistrust towards environmental movements and organizations advocating for action on climate change. Some attribute this mistrust to concerns about population control and a perceived anti-human sentiment within the environmental movement. As a result, they may view climate change action as part of a broader agenda that conflicts with their religious values, leading to opposition and resistance.
Overcoming the Divide
While Evangelical Christian opposition to action on climate change appears rooted in deeply held beliefs and political affiliations, bridging this divide is essential in addressing the urgent need for environmental action. Encouraging open dialogue, providing accurate and accessible scientific information, and highlighting the compatibility between environmental stewardship and Christian values can help foster understanding and collaboration between the environmental and Evangelical Christian communities.
Ultimately, by finding common ground and emphasizing shared goals of protecting God's creation and ensuring a sustainable future, it is possible to transcend ideological differences and work together towards effective climate change solutions.

Why are white evangelicals the most skeptical major religious group in America regarding climate change? Previous scholarship has pointed to cognitive factors such as conservative politics, anti-science attitudes, aversion to big government, and theology. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork, The Gospel of Climate Skepticism reveals the extent to which climate skepticism and anti-environmentalism have in fact become embedded in the social world of many conservative evangelicals. Rejecting the common assumption that evangelicals’ skepticism is simply a side effect of political or theological conservatism, the book further shows that between 2006 and 2015, leaders and pundits associated with the Christian Right widely promoted skepticism as the biblical position on climate change. The Gospel of Climate Skepticism offers a compelling portrait of how during a critical period of recent history, political and religious interests intersected to prevent evangelicals from offering a unified voice in support of legislative action to address climate change.
