Parenting strategies vary greatly in the world, from parent to parent and across generations and cultures. Recounted in the form of a narrative with dialogue, this workshop focuses on the Ntumu Tribe of Cameroon in West Africa, who have developed some interesting insights into a natural parenting; insights which recognizes that nature itself and the whole of a society are the fundamental parenting influences of individuals who never outgrow the need for parenting. At the core of their parenting process is an awareness that a shared sense of appropriateness is the essence of social cohesion. Even though the most apparent product of their parenting strategies is the willing and continuous transference of knowledge, among the Ntumu, wisdom is the goal of life and not the mere accumulation of knowledge. The acquisition of knowledge is seen as a natural consequence of living, whereas wisdom is not. The achievement of wisdom, especially collective wisdom, requires a stable social system which has at its foundation proven parenting strategies. The Impossibility Of Sharing African Toys is part of a series entitled: New Civilization Workshops. These facilitate the development of new ways of thinking about the arts, linguistics, organized religion, education, and social and economic development.
