The name Lokmanya Tilak reverberates through the annals of Indian history as an iconic freedom fighter, nationalist, social reformer, and journalist.

Early Life and Education

On July 23, 1856, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, popularly known as Lokmanya Tilak, was born in a Chitpavan Brahmin family in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. His father, Gangadhar Tilak, was a Sanskrit scholar and a teacher. Influenced by his father's passion for education and learning, Tilak developed a keen interest in academics from an early age.

Tilak pursued his education at Deccan College in Pune and later studied law at the Government Law College in Mumbai. During his college years, he showcased his brilliance as a student, often delving into a wide range of subjects beyond the prescribed curriculum.

Activism and Journalism

Tilak's journey into public life began as a journalist. In 1881, he co-founded the 'Kesari' newspaper, written in Marathi, which quickly gained prominence across Maharashtra. Through his newspaper, Tilak fearlessly voiced his opinions, rallied against British oppression, and ignited the spirit of nationalism among the masses.

As an activist, Lokmanya Tilak advocated for self-rule and played a pivotal role in the independence movement. He believed in using Swadeshi (indigenous) goods as a means to challenge the economic dominance of the British Empire over India.

One of Tilak's most notable contributions was his call for celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi as a public event and not just a private religious festival. He transformed the festival into a mass movement, leveraging it to unite people against British rule.

Political Career

Tilak's political career gained momentum with his entry into the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1890. Initially believing in collaboration with the British Raj, Tilak gradually shifted towards a more assertive approach, advocating for complete independence.

He played a significant role in the formation of the extremist faction within the INC, popularly known as the 'Bal Gangadhar Tilak Made Indian National Congress.' His radical perspective, anti-British stance, and nationalistic fervor garnered immense support from people disillusioned with British colonial rule.

Tilak mentored several prominent Indian leaders, including Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal, and Aurobindo Ghose, strengthening the freedom struggle against British rule.

Imprisonments and Trials

Tilak's unwavering passion for independence and his revolutionary ideas didn't go unnoticed by the British authorities. He faced multiple imprisonments and trials throughout his life.

In 1897, Tilak was charged with sedition for his fiery speeches and writings. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, which further fueled his determination to fight for India's freedom.

His most notable trial was the 'Kesari' sedition case in 1908. Accused of inciting violence through his newspaper, Tilak was given a six-year prison sentence. While in prison, he wrote extensively, emphasizing the importance of education and national unity in his work, "Gita Rahasya."

The Legacy and Influence

Lokmanya Tilak's influence on Indian nationalism and the freedom movement cannot be overstated. His unwavering commitment to India's independence galvanized millions of Indians to rise against British oppression.

Tilak's efforts to establish unity among diverse sections of Indian society, regardless of caste, creed, or religion, earned him the title of "Lokmanya," meaning "revered by the people."

His contributions, especially in the fields of education, journalism, and political activism, continue to inspire generations of Indians to work towards a more inclusive, progressive, and independent India.

Lokmanya Tilak's life and times capture the essence of relentless determination, fearlessness, and love for one's motherland. His unwavering commitment to the cause of Indian independence serves as a guiding light for future generations, reminding them of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters.

The legacy of Lokmanya Tilak reverberates through the echoes of time, reminding us of the power of unity, nationalism, and the indomitable spirit of a nation yearning to break free from the shackles of colonial rule.

The word ‘lok’ means public and ‘manya’ means accepted. Thus lokmanya means a person who has been accepted by people. In his context it means accepted by people as their leader. ‘Lokmanya’ Keshav Bal Gangadhar Tilak was recognized by the British as the Father of the Indian National Movement because of activities that stirred feelings of nationalism in the hearts of every Indian. Though his ideals often differed from Mahatma Gandhi; his views regarding crucial matters were sometimes accepted many times by Gandhiji.
A revolutionary and social reformer in the true sense of the word; he was a freedom fighter who elicited esteem from all; even his enemies. His indomitable spirit was appreciated by people. He voiced his opinions in speeches and through the newspaper; and everyone especially the British feared his speeches as well as editorials for they provoked Indians to fight for freedom. The British tried to put a ban on them; but did they succeed?
The book observes Tilak’s multifaceted personality through the eyes of people. It is a beneficial book for students; scholars and historians alike.
