The Motivation Behind the Raid

As the Satsuma domain sought to expand its influence, it set its sights on the independent Kingdom of Ryukyu, located in what is now modern-day Okinawa. The kingdom, known for its strategic sea trade routes and prosperous economy, represented an attractive target for the ambitious daimyo of Satsuma. Thus, the stage was set for a daring raid that would leave an indelible mark on history.

The Raid: A Brave and Calculated Move

In 1609, the Satsuma domain dispatched an army of Samurai warriors, led by Shimazu Tadatsune, to conquer Okinawa. This well-planned and coordinated assault took the defenders of Okinawa by surprise, as they were ill-prepared for such a formidable adversary. The Samurai's swift capture of King Sho Nei and the subjugation of the kingdom shocked the entire region and reverberated throughout Japan.

This integration laid the foundation for the unique blend of Okinawan culture we witness today.

A brilliant but little-known operation, the Shimazu clan raid on the independent kingdom of Ryukyu (modern Okinawa) in 1609 is one of the most extraordinary episodes in samurai history and the culmination of centuries of rivalry between the two powers. The defeat of the Shimazu at Sekigahara in 1600, and their need to win favour with the new Shogun, led them to hatch an audacious plot to attack the islands on the Shogun's behalf and bring back the king of Ryukyu as a hostage. Stephen Turnbull gives a blow-by-blow account of the operation, from the daring Shimazu amphibious landing, to their rapid advance overland, and the tactical feigned retreat that saw the Shimazu defeat the Okinawan army and kidnap their king in spectacular fashion. With a detailed background and specially commissioned artwork, the scene is set for a dramatic retelling of this fascinating raid.
