An Unlikely Companion: The Turtle

Central to the story is Aref's newfound friendship with a majestic sea turtle he encounters during his explorations. This ethereal creature serves as a metaphor for the young protagonist's personal growth and resilience as he faces the challenges of change. Through this connection, Aref learns valuable life lessons about patience, adaptability, and the importance of embracing the unknown.

Just as the turtle navigates vast oceans with grace and determination, Aref learns to navigate the unpredictable currents and tides of life. His encounters with the turtle become a symbol of hope, reminding him of his own strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

A Sensitive Exploration of Cultural Identity

Nye skillfully weaves the themes of cultural identity and belonging into the fabric of "The Turtle of Oman." As Aref prepares to leave behind his Arab heritage and embrace a new culture in America, he grapples with questions of identity, finding solace in the stories and memories he carries with him.

Through Aref's evocative journey, Nye encourages readers to reflect on their own identities and heritage, igniting a sense of pride and nostalgia. With a deft touch, she beautifully showcases the importance of cultural diversity and the power of embracing our roots in shaping our personal narratives.

The Power of Connections

At its core, "The Turtle of Oman" explores the profound impact that connections with others can have on our lives. As Aref bids farewell to his loved ones in Oman, he discovers the importance of relationships and the lasting impressions they leave on our hearts.

Friendships, family ties, and fleeting encounters all play pivotal roles in Aref's journey, reminding us of the incredible influence that even brief connections can have on our growth and understanding of the world around us. Nye's exquisite portrayal of these relationships allows readers to reflect on their own lives, fostering a deeper appreciation for the people who have shaped their own paths.

Praised by the Horn Book as “both quiet and exhilarating,” this novel by the acclaimed poet and National Book Award Finalist Naomi Shihab Nye follows Aref Al-Amri as he says goodbye to everything and everyone he loves in his hometown of Muscat, Oman, as his family prepares to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan. This book was awarded a 2015 Middle East Book Award, was named a Notable Book by the American Library Association, and includes extra material by the author.

Aref Al-Amri does not want to leave Oman. He does not want to leave his elementary school, his friends, or his beloved grandfather, Siddi. He does not want to live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where his parents will go to graduate school. His mother is desperate for him to pack his suitcase, but he refuses. Finally, she calls Siddi for help. But rather than pack, Aref and Siddi go on a series of adventures. They visit the camp of a thousand stars deep in the desert, they sleep on Siddi's roof, they fish in the Gulf of Oman and dream about going to India, and they travel to the nature reserve to watch the sea turtles. At each stop, Siddi finds a small stone that he later slips into Aref's suitcase—mementos of home.

Naomi Shihab Nye's warmth, attention to detail, and belief in the power of empathy and connection shines from every page. Features black-and-white spot art and decorations by Betsy Peterschmidt.
