This is an to the sciences of Oceanography and Meteorology. Beginning from the early days when Humankind first ventured onto the sea, navigation became increasingly more complex as ships sailed away from the sight of land and into the open oceans. The use of Astronomy to navigate soon became more mathematical as the need for accuracy became critical during long sea voyages.
The nature and direction of the winds and of the ocean currents also became part of the seafarer’s lore and gradually developed into the Science of Oceanography in the 19th Century. Similarly, the need for more information about how the winds of the Earth flowed and how the forces of the weather were controlled developed into the Science of Meteorology. The instruments which were developed and used in these two Science, and of the work of some of the most famous Scientists are also explained.
With some working knowledge of how the currents of water and air operate around the globe, Oceanographers attempted to probe deeper into the seas. Their finding from the 1960’s revealed a complex and dynamic sea floor. Gradually the Theory of Sea-Floor Spreading and Continental Drift merged into the major understand of Plate Tectonics, now the major mechanism for understanding the formation of the Earth’s surface.
