Unsaintly Saints: The Mormons In Their Own Words
Have you ever wondered what it means to be a Mormon? Perhaps you've heard of them but never really understood their beliefs and practices. In this article, we will dive deep into the world of Mormons and explore their fascinating history, theology, and the challenges they face in the modern world.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormons, is a religious movement that originated in the early 19th century. Founded by Joseph Smith Jr., this faith has grown into one of the fastest-growing and most influential religions in the United States.
The Origins of the Mormon Faith
Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of the Mormon faith, claimed to have been visited by God the Father and Jesus Christ in a vision. According to Smith, he was chosen to restore the true Christian Church on Earth. This led to the publication of the Book of Mormon, which is considered by Mormons to be another testament of Jesus Christ, alongside the Bible.

The Mormon faith faced significant persecution and opposition throughout its early years. The controversial practice of plural marriage, or polygamy, further intensified the scrutiny surrounding the religion. Eventually, in an effort to gain statehood for Utah, the church officially abandoned polygamy in 1890.
Mormon Beliefs and Theology
Central to Mormon belief is the notion that families can be sealed together for eternity in the afterlife. Mormons believe that God created humans to become like Him and attain godhood themselves. They also believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of humanity.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints places a strong emphasis on personal revelation and the importance of living a moral and virtuous life. Mormons adhere to a strict code of conduct, which includes abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. They are also encouraged to attend weekly worship services and participate in temple rituals.
Modern Challenges Faced by Mormons
Despite its growth and success, the Mormon faith faces several challenges in the modern world. One of the key challenges is reconciling traditional beliefs with contemporary social issues. As society becomes more accepting of diverse lifestyles, Mormons are grappling with how to integrate these changing norms while maintaining their core religious principles.
Furthermore, the portrayal of Mormons in popular culture has often been stereotypical and misunderstood. This has led to misconceptions and biases against the faith. However, Mormons are actively working to improve their image and promote a better understanding of their beliefs and practices.
In Their Own Words: Insights from Mormons
To gain a better understanding of the Mormon faith, we spoke to several members of the community and asked them to share their personal experiences and insights. Here are some of their thoughts:
"Being a Mormon is not just about going to church on Sundays. It's about integrating our beliefs into every aspect of our lives and striving to live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ." - John, a devoted Mormon.
"Mormonism has given me a sense of purpose and direction. It has provided me with a community of like-minded individuals who support and uplift each other." - Sarah, a young Mormon woman.
"Our faith teaches us the importance of service and helping those in need. I am proud to be a part of a community that actively engages in humanitarian efforts around the world." - David, a Mormon missionary.
The Mormon faith is a rich and complex belief system that continues to shape the lives of millions around the world. Despite the challenges they face, Mormons strive to live according to their deeply held convictions. By understanding the history, theology, and experiences of Mormons in their own words, we can gain a deeper appreciation for this vibrant and unique religious movement.

Here in one volume of quotations is the 'other' side of Mormon history. Joseph Smith failing to walk on water; Adam is the father of Jesus; God was once a man; the Mormon Church's baptism of Adolf Hitler after his death; beer and whiskey drinking Mormons; black skin is a curse; the Book of Mormon is superior to the Bible; the Catholic Church is "the mother of harlots"; don't marry Native Americans; Mormons can become gods; the Garden of Eden was in Missouri; God and Jesus were polygamists; the Jews killed Jesus; Joseph Smith marries other men's wives; the Mormon church is the only true church, all others are wrong; polygamy is better for children; when Jesus returns he will return to Missouri; people like us live on the Moon and the Sun; and hundreds more.
Most of the quotations are from Mormon leaders themselves, and each is cited as to its exact source. Others are from eye-witness accounts. The complete listing of each source can be found in the Sources section at the back of the book. Also, there is a Biographical Notes section which gives brief biographical information concerning each person quoted.
