The rapid growth of urban areas in the global south presents both opportunities and challenges for city planners and policymakers. With the population in these regions projected to increase significantly in the coming decades, it is crucial to ensure that the infrastructure and planning strategies are in place to support sustainable and livable cities.

As cities become more crowded and resources become scarce, the global south must adopt innovative approaches to urban planning and development. This article will explore some key strategies for thinking and doing better cities in the global south, specifically focusing on Future City 14.

1. Embrace Sustainable Transportation

One of the most pressing issues in urban areas is transportation. Inadequate public transportation systems and congested roads result in increased pollution and decreased quality of life. To combat these challenges, Future City 14 needs to invest in sustainable transportation options such as electric vehicles, cycling infrastructure, and efficient public transport networks.

By encouraging the use of alternative modes of transportation, the city can reduce its carbon footprint and improve air quality. This not only benefits the environment but also enhances the well-being of its residents.

2. Foster Social Inclusion

In many cities of the global south, inequality is prevalent. Future City 14 should aim to foster social inclusion by providing affordable housing options, quality education, and healthcare services to all its residents.

By ensuring that no one is left behind, the city can create a more cohesive and prosperous society. This can be achieved by implementing policies that promote affordable housing developments, equal access to education, and healthcare facilities in underserved areas.

3. Prioritize Green Spaces

Maintaining a balance between urban development and green spaces is crucial for the well-being of residents. Future City 14 should prioritize the creation and preservation of parks, gardens, and other green areas.

Green spaces provide numerous benefits, including improved air quality, reduced urban heat island effect, and opportunities for recreational activities. By incorporating more green spaces into its urban planning, Future City 14 can create a healthier and more sustainable environment for its residents.

4. Invest in Renewable Energy

As the global south grapples with energy demands, investing in renewable energy sources is essential. Future City 14 should focus on harnessing solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources as part of its urban development plan.

By diversifying its energy portfolio and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, the city can not only mitigate the environmental impact but also create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

5. Enhance Urban Resilience

The global south is more susceptible to natural disasters such as floods, storms, and earthquakes. Future City 14 needs to prioritize urban resilience to ensure that it can withstand and recover from these events effectively.

This can be achieved by implementing robust disaster preparedness plans, improving infrastructure to withstand extreme weather conditions, and promoting community engagement in disaster response and recovery efforts.

6. Embrace Technology for Smart Cities

Technological advancements offer immense potential for improving urban living. Future City 14 should embrace smart city solutions that leverage data and connectivity to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and livability.

Smart solutions could include smart grid systems for efficient energy distribution, intelligent transportation systems for traffic management, and smart sensors for environmental monitoring. By leveraging technology, Future City 14 can create a more connected and efficient urban environment.

The global south is at a critical juncture in terms of urban development. Future City 14 must adopt strategies that prioritize sustainability, social inclusion, and resilience to create better cities for its residents.

By embracing sustainable transportation, fostering social inclusion, prioritizing green spaces, investing in renewable energy, enhancing urban resilience, and leveraging technology for smart solutions, Future City 14 can pave the way for a brighter and more livable future in the global south.

It is imperative for city planners and policymakers to think creatively and proactively to address the unique challenges faced by urban areas in the global south. Only then can we create cities that are not only productive and efficient but also inclusive and sustainable.

This open access book revisits the theoretical foundations of urban planning and the application of these concepts and methods in the context of Southern countries by examining several case studies from different regions of the world. For instance, the case of Koudougou, a medium-sized city in one of the poorest countries in the world, Burkina Faso, with a population of 115.000 inhabitants, allows us to understand concretely which and how these deficiencies are translated in an African urban context. In contrast, the case of Nueve de Julio, intermediate city of 50.000 dwellers in the pampa Argentina, addresses the new forms of spatial fragmentation and social exclusion linked with agro export and crisis of the international markets. Case studies are also included for cities in Asia and Latin America. Differences and similarities between cases allow us to foresee alternative models of urban planning better adapted to tackle poverty and find efficient ways for more inclusive cities in developing and emerging countries, interacting several dimensions linked with high rates of urbanization: territorial fragmentation; environmental contamination; social disparities and exclusion, informal economy and habitat, urban governance and democracy.
