Religion is a deeply personal and multifaceted aspect of human identity. It shapes beliefs, morals, and values, providing individuals with a sense of purpose and belonging. For many, religion is inherited and unquestionable, passed down through generations like an heirloom. But what happens when someone finds themselves questioning their religious identity? In this article, we delve into the complexities of one such journey – the struggle of those who could not be Hindu.

Unveiling the Rug

India has been synonymous with Hinduism for centuries. With over a billion adherents, Hinduism is the largest religion in India, influencing every aspect of society. From cultural practices to political ideologies, Hinduism is deeply ingrained in the nation's fabric. Yet, amidst the adoration and deep-rooted devotion, there exists a segment of individuals who tread a different path.

The phenomenon of not being able to identify as Hindu is not new. Throughout history, there have been countless souls who grappled with their religious identity, seeking solace beyond the confines of Hinduism. It is essential to understand that these individuals are not renegades out to destroy Hinduism; instead, they represent the complexities of the human experience and the ever-evolving nature of belief systems.

A Journey of Souls

For some, the realization that they could not be Hindu strikes early in life, while others find themselves grappling with this identity crisis later on. These journeys are as diverse as the individuals themselves, influenced by personal experiences, encounters with different belief systems, and a deep yearning for truth.

One such journey belongs to Rajesh, a young boy raised in a devout Hindu household in the bustling city of Mumbai. As Rajesh grew older, he began to question the notions of divinity, rituals, and religious practices instilled in him since childhood. Intrigued by the teachings of Buddhism, he embarked on a transformative journey, embracing a spiritual path that resonated with his quest for enlightenment.

Rajesh's story is not unique. It echoes the sentiments of countless others who find themselves drawn to alternative belief systems or philosophical ideologies that offer different perspectives on life and spirituality. The reasons for seeking alternative paths are as varied as the individuals themselves but often stem from a deep desire to find personal fulfillment and spiritual growth.

Experiencing the Alienation

Choosing to step away from the predominant religion can be an incredibly isolating experience. The alienation faced by those who could not be Hindu can stem from familial disapproval, societal criticism, and a sense of loss. The rejection of their religious identity can lead to strained relationships, estrangement from communities, and internal conflict.

Deepa, a woman who renounced her Hindu roots to convert to Christianity, shares her painful journey of alienation. Growing up in a conservative Hindu family, Deepa found solace and purpose in the teachings of Christianity. However, her decision to embrace a different faith was met with hostility and rejection from her loved ones. She was labeled as a traitor to her heritage and struggled to find acceptance in her newfound community.

In extreme cases, the choice to abandon Hinduism can even result in physical harm. While such instances are rare, the repercussions faced by those who deviate from the norm can be severe. It is the fear of such consequences that often keeps individuals questioning their religious identity trapped in a vicious cycle of internal conflict.

The Importance of Understanding

It is crucial for society as a whole to embrace empathetic understanding towards those who could not be Hindu. By recognizing that religious identity is a deeply personal journey, we can foster an environment that encourages open dialogue and acceptance. Rejecting the dogma that comes with religion does not equate to rejecting culture, heritage, or personal values.

At the heart of it all, those who could not be Hindu are merely individuals seeking to live authentic lives, driven by a hunger for truth and purpose. Their decisions should be respected, and their stories should serve as a catalyst for broader discussions about religious identity and freedom of choice.

The Everlasting Quest

The journey of those who could not be Hindu can be likened to a pilgrimage of the soul. It represents an unwavering pursuit of truth and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. While their choices may challenge societal norms, it is crucial to remember that true progress is born from embracing diversity and accepting that religious identity is not a monolithic concept.

So, let us applaud those who dare to question, who dare to explore unfamiliar territories in search of their own spiritual fulfillment. The narratives of those who could not be Hindu serve as a reminder that one's religious identity should never be confined to the boundaries imposed by society. It is a dynamic and ever-evolving facet of human existence, and it is up to us to embrace its complexities.

Religious identity is an intricate tapestry, woven with threads of culture, tradition, and personal belief. The stories of those who could not be Hindu shed light on the challenges faced by individuals who go beyond the established norms to find their own truth. As a society, it is our responsibility to foster an environment of understanding and acceptance, allowing everyone to experience the freedom to choose their religious path. By celebrating diversity, we can truly embrace the beauty of human experience and pave the way for a more inclusive world.

In 1987, as the Ramjanmabhoomi movement gathers momentum, a thirteen-year-old from a village in Rajasthan joins the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Despite his untouchable status, he quickly rises to the post of karyavah. Ahead of the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992, he becomes the district office chief of Bhilwara. He hates Muslims with a passion without having met one. He joins thousands of karsevaks to Ayodhya. He mocks Mulla-Yam Singh.
He participates in riots. He goes to jail. He finds Hindutva intoxicating. He is ready to die for the Hindu Rashtra.

And yet he remains a lesser Hindu. He turns into a critic of the Sangh, becomes an Ambedkarite and makes it his life’s mission to expose the hypocrisies of Hindutva.

In this explosive memoir, translated by Nivedita Menon from the Hindi, Bhanwar Meghwanshi tells us what it meant to be an untouchable in the RSS. And what it means to become Dalit.

‘A memoir like this is nothing short of a miracle’—Perumal Murugan

‘A searing, painfully honest memoir in fluent and lucid prose’—Shashi Tharoor

‘Every Indian must read this. It will open your eyes and free your thoughts’—Benyamin

‘A revelation. This insider account of the RSS exposes Hindu nationalism’—Jean Dreze

‘A remarkable book by a remarkable man’—Christophe Jaffrelot
